South Tyneside
The South Tyneside history pages feature Jarrow, Hebburn and South Shields and villages along the coast and inland south towards Sunderland. The area was historically in County Durham. Jarrow, like Wallsend across the river has an interesting mix of ancient and industrial history with links to the famed Anglo-Saxon monk, the Venerable Bede. South Shields at the mouth of the Tyne has a maritime history going back to the Romans.
