Cumberland and Westmorland History
The region called Cumbria or ‘the Lake District’ is situated just across the Pennines in the far north western corner of England. It is a region with links to Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Lancashire. The city of Carlisle and area around Brampton at the western end of Hadrian’s Wall lie close to Scotland and share with Northumberland a borderland history of raiding and reiving. The Cumberland and Westmorland region includes some of the highest fells in England, England’s biggest and most beautiful lakes and lots of breathtaking scenery.
