In the Beginning : North East England

350,000,000BC –  Rocks, Rivers, Mountains and Sea

The rocks and rich resources that shaped so much of our region’s future story were forged and fashioned long before man evolved, creating a landscape that set the scene for stories of settlements, saints, borders, battles, castles and coal.

We say a little about the rocks of our region in a feature covering North East Geology but our timeline focuses on the human story.

Yet, even in the course of human occupation our landscape has seen many changes, not just through natural erosion, or shifting sea levels but often through the changes brought about by man.
